Two-shot goose hunt begins today in Lamar

LAMAR - The geese are close. Hunters can hear thousands of them milling about on fields in the eastern snow-covered plains.
With flocks of geese flying in V-streams in the crisp and cool sky, hunters from around the state are gathering this week for the 40th annual Southeast Colorado Two-Shot Celebrity Goose Hunt.
"This is an event that has been growing and growing over the years - it's fun for everyone," said RoseAnn Yates, an event organizer.
The event kicked off Wednesday with the president's reception at the Cow Palace Inn.
Former Denver Broncos Dave Studdard and Ralph Tamm are the guest celebrities at this year's event.
"Each year we try to bring celebrities to participate in the event. They usually come when they can - it adds to the event," Yates said.
The goose hunt features events through Saturday.
Hunters will participate in sporting clay shooting and upland game bird hunting today.
The Koshare Indian Dancers from La Junta will perform during the landowner and guide dinner in the Cow Palace courtyard today at 6 p.m. This will be a free event and the public is invited.
The official goose hunting segment of the event will begin Friday with a 3:30 a.m. breakfast buffet, after which hunters will depart for their chosen hunting locations.
"They hunt until it gets dark," Yates said.
Yates said eight teams, with six shooters on each team, will participate. Under the rules, each hunter is limited to only two shots.
On Saturday, the public is invited to a sporting clay shoot at 9 a.m. A complimentary barbecue hosted by Heritage Farms and Sportsman's Campground will take place at 11 a.m.
